Betsy DeVos and Educational Pathways

The Unites States’ 11th Education Secretary has been hard at work. Betsy DeVos was appointed to the position in 2017 under President Trump. While she has been criticized for her lack of experience in teaching, that’s really not what this is about. This is about public funding for private schools, or at least that is the myth being spread. DeVos says that no public funding is being used for private education. In fact, philanthropy has been the main way that charter schools and private schools are receiving money.

Are vouchers still a thing? DeVos says that people who criticize the program don’t understand it. In her interview with “60 Minutes,” she talked about the way that educational choice is supposed to work. In fact, it’s meant to help students have a choice in where they go to school, particularly if they live in a failing school district or want to go to a program that is only at one particular school. A magnet program at another high school may be for music, business law, or performing arts. Students can go to this program specifically, and in some cases, there are college preparatory classes that are included.

Betsy DeVos has been working hard for educational choice for some time. She started at Calvin College and continued to work on education reform throughout Gerald Ford’s campaign. She was instrumental in leading the way for education reform in Michigan as part of the Republican Party, and now she is the US Education Secretary. While she has inherited many problems from previous administrations, her goal has been to place student’s first and do the best job possible to get them into better schools while she still has time in Washington.

It’s been difficult for Betsy DeVos who had a lifelong dream of becoming the US Education Secretary. She has been working hard for American students for many years, and despite critics that have talked about her political agenda, she has always worked hard to help students in underprivileged areas. Her experience has been helping students, not necessarily as a teacher.

However, Betsy DeVos’ mother was a public school teacher, and she always worked hard to support education in their home. In Grand Rapids, Betsy DeVos has even co-founded a charter school. It’s located on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Students can try to become pilots and flight operators at the school that she created with her husband Dick DeVos.

Betsy DeVos continues to work hard for students and has been meeting with the First Lady to tour the United States. Her tour started off in Miami where she visited charter schools and supported educational choice programs in the Sunshine State.
